
Boxing in Latvia was found in 1920, when boxing was firstincluded in to a common sporting activities in Riga. Already in 1924 on Olympic games in Paris Latvian boxers presented the nation. Our boxers participated in Europe and organized international tournaments. The most popular boxers of 30` s were V. Matison, R. Bertinsh, G. Dzenis. The most outstanding boxers of 40` s was inhabitant of Riga A. Knisis .The first postwar championship of Latvia was held in September 1945. Boxing gained more and more popularity among Latvian youth and the sport developed quickly. The popularity of the sport brought success to Latvia in 50` s and 60` s.
The All-Union ring was proudly declared in Latvia due to the famous boxers such as J. Lancers, I. Enkuzis, A. Tuminsh, V Trepshi, J. Asanov, J. Rovich, V. Terauds and V. Umbrass. During 70` s and 80` s the sport kept developing on a professional level: I.Chitalkin, N. Lodin, V. Bodnja, J. Olifrienko, A. Trocenko and J. Vaulin proudly presented Latvia. Among them was discovered N 1 boxer of Latvia Aloiz Tuminsh. The champion of Europe 1961, silver prizewinner 1963, twice the champion USSR, repeated prizewinner and victor of the largest tournaments. Another outstanding boxer Latvia was Yury Vaulin. The Champion of Europe among uniors 1983, Champion of competitions of the peoples 1986, Champion of Union 1987, Victor of Cup of the World, Champion of Europe 1987. When Latvia became an independent country Latvian boxers participate in European Championships , World Cups and even Olympic games. Igor Shaplavsky in Barselona won 5th place, R. Kuklin participated in the Olympic games in Atlanta. The fifth places won on Championship of the World Vasily Melnikov, Eduard Narbut. Fifth on Championship of Europe was Ervin Helmanis. Indeed, Latvian boxing seems to have a bright future due to our juniors: Andrew Barabanov won the third place and Roman Kulichenko won the fifth place in the World championship among juniors. A. Tarvid became a bronze prizewinner at European championship and Luis Murshkis won the silver award in Makedonia.
